I feared that if I forgave, it would make what happened okay and I wanted justice before I was ever willing to let this go…. So I withheld forgiveness. I held onto the pain, reliving it in my head over and over again. Months turned to years, and years turned to the better part of a decade.
Buddha says, “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die.” This could not be more true. ‘Unforgiveness’ is toxic and lethal to your mental and emotional well-being, but with so much fear and misnomers surrounding forgiveness, it’s no wonder so many of us get trapped drinking this poison year after year.
After more than a decade of poison drinking, I was over it. I became obsessed with finding forgiveness solutions. On my journey I discovered many truths and myths surrounding forgiveness that can break you free or keep you stuck. Why is Forgiveness so difficult?
Some of the biggest blocks in forgiveness are the traditional ways we have been told to forgive. We are told to “forgive and forget”, to “put the past behind us” and to “never let yourself off the hook”. Though I think the intention with many of the forgiveness ‘myths’ were meant for good, they can keep us stuck in ‘unforgiveness’ of ourselves and others.
Whether we fear it happening again, are angry by the injustice, or feel we (or they) don’t deserve our forgiveness, these mental landmines keep us paralyzed. What makes me qualified to teach this?
I am a firm believer that you should always learn from those who have been there, done that. Unfortunately, forgiveness is one area I have a tremendous amount of experience. Like most people, I have a story filled with heartache and pain. From the early age of 5-years old my life was flooded with dysfunction, family betrayal, sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, and so much more.
As a result of this chaos, my heart closed off to love, trust, and a willingness to be vulnerable. I unconsciously was always on guard, easily offended, and often assumed the worse. I mean, how could I trust others when the people who are sworn to protect me committed the biggest crimes? I was lost and hadn’t had the first clue how to forgive such unforgivable crimes.
This hurt would haunt me, my happiness, and relationships for years to follow. Choosing to forgive wasn’t easy. I feared being hurt again, worried that by accepting my history would somehow make what was done acceptable, and refused to forgive until justice was done. All of these fears (and many more) keep me stuck in my suffering. It wasn’t until I learned that forgiveness was something I had to do for myself, regardless of being a victim of abuse. Buddha used to say, “Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional” and it’s the unwilling to forgive, unwilling to do the work, and unwillingness to change is what causes so much suffering.
I did the work and committed to the practice I have outlined in this course. Forgiveness didn’t happen overnight, but with the skill’s you will learn in the course, it will happen. I know what it’s like to live a life on guard and closed off to so much of life’s magic but this does not have to be your future. I know this because it is no longer mine. Today my heart is filled with love, trust, and joy. I am happily married and have a life filled with amazing friends.
